Hiring an SEO Consultant vs Learning On Your Own

When we talk about learning SEO on our own for our business website, we have to consider a few things. First, learning on site SEO is definitely not overnight. Most SEO professionals have been in the game for more than 10 years. Second, on site SEO is a challenge, even for the knowledgeable who can spend a week or two optimizing a site to comply with SEO for Google standards. And last, but definitely not least in any way, off site SEO can be a very intricate process that needs a huge amount of time for not only learning, but also implementing. That said, learning on your own is not impossible, simply very time consuming and a huge amount of trial and error. Let’s take this step by step.

SEO in its simplest form is creating on site and off site content that is specifically formatted for the use of search engines being able to read the content well. Because search engine ranking, such as Google’s algorithms, are performed by robots, or automatic readers, our content is developed so it can see it and rank appropriately. This means that we setup our SEO keywords and link SEO so that the bots can identify them instead of just passing them by without realizing that it is relevant to our site.

Understanding this method of on site development is easier as time goes on; however, the time needed to develop this content is also a factor. The average page can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the content and the research necessary for that specific page. Most business owners have zero time to accomplish this. Thus an SEO consultant, whom would develop the entire on site SEO, regardless of pages, would probably have a better return on investment.

Learning everything that Google looks for both on site and off site could technically only take about a month of studying at around 3 to 4 hours per day. But the payoff of learning everything Google looks for in a site is extremely worth the time for any business. This includes Google places and Google’s indexing algorithms. The fact that we focus on Google is not a coincidence. We have mentioned this before, but Google is the top search engine, and if a business site is high in Google, it is more often than not very high in other search engines as well. And this is mainly because search engines want to emulate the type of search engine Google is.

In the end, we as business owner look at it like this: I can easily learn how to build a vehicle, however, which is more costly on my part, learning and building a vehicle for resale, or just paying someone to build it and resell it? That depends on the type of vehicle. The same goes with marketing online. Do I want to learn how to develop a website, develop graphic art skills, learn SEO, spend more time developing my SEO, and then in 6 months I can have a great website with awesome SEO, and I only lost about 300 hours or more and 6 months to obtain this. Where in reality, if I simply contracted an SEO consultant, I could have it all completed in a short period of 45 days. It seems like a no brainer to me.
